Are You Ready For Mentoring?

in Mentor

You don't need to look very hard to find someone who'll tell you all about the benefits of mentoring. You can learn a great deal from the right mentor. The process can make running and growing your business more efficient and can save you from making mistakes. It's a great learning curve shortened and is something from which anyone who owns his or her own business can benefit.

That doesn't mean that everyone should get involved, though. If you want to experience the benefits or mentoring, you need to be ready for the process. Here are three factors to keep in mind as you decide whether to seek out a mentor.

Are you ready to listen?

The key to capturing the advantages of mentoring is being willing to listen to the counsel of your mentor. That sounds obvious, but it's a major stumbling block for some people. If you're not willing to listen to perspectives that may not match your own and you can't handle constructive criticism, you're not a good candidate. You need to develop those skills before finding a mentor.

Are you ready to change?

All of the good advice in the world won't help your business if you don't act on it. If you aren't ready to adjust your plans and to incorporate what you might learn from a mentor, the timing just isn't right. Mentoring requires open-mindedness and a degree of flexibility to produce results. You need to be ready to make adjustments.

Are you expecting too much?

A mentor can be invaluable. He or she won't run your business, however. In some cases, he or she may offer inaccurate advice. Mentors are people, not flawless super computer-based guidance systems. If you want a mentor because you want someone to make decisions for you and to take the helm of your business, you need to steer clear of mentoring. That's not what the process does.

Consider those questions carefully. They should give you a very clear idea of whether you're ready for mentoring. If you're not there yet, you might want to reconsider your perspective in order to eventually take advantage of the opportunity.
